Frequently Asked Yellow Bus Questions

Q: I want my K4-12 children to ride the bus. Do they qualify?

A: Students (K4-12) who live two miles or more from their boundary school or who must cross a road deemed hazardous road are eligible for transportation to their home (boundary) school.

Q: My child lives too close to school to ride the bus. What do I do?

A:

  • Check your school to see if there is a parent car pool group.
  • Check with your school on what day care providers are serving them already.  Some daycare providers offer transportation services
  • Student at secondary schools can still use the city transit system. They will just have to pay for their own services.

Q: Can my child use an alternate address other than my home address?

A: Alternate address transportation is allowed for families who would like their child picked up and dropped off at a location other than their home address and already qualify for transportation.  The alternate address is usually a grandparent’s home, babysitter’s home, or daycare. The address must qualify and be in the attendance boundary of the child’s school and in the bus boundary area. Forms must be submitted by August 1 and need to be filled out each year regardless if you have completed one the previous year.

Q: I don’t think it is fair that my child should have to walk so far to school. Why can’t you bus all kids who live closer than two miles?

A: We hope you understand that it is not easy for us to deny any child busing. However, we must follow State Laws and School Board Polices pertaining to the transportation decisions about who qualifies for transportation and who doesn’t. These laws and policies help make decisions fair for everyone.

Q: How are bus stops determined?

A: Bus stop locations are determined by the bus company and the office of transportation to create the smoothest/shortest path for the bus drivers and to pick up multiple students at one stop. Keeping the fewest stops per bus route helps your child by reducing travel time and increasing safety. It is very important your child be at their designated bus stop ten minutes prior to their scheduled time. Generally, home stops are only created for a student with special needs or if the roadway has been deemed hazardous.

Q: The bus passes by my house. Why can’t it just stop and pick up my child at home? 

A: ºÚÁÏÉçAPP Unified transports more than 7,000 students each day.  We run a 3 tier bell time schedule to control the districts transportation.  It would be impossible to provide door-to-door service to everyone, and still arrive at school on-time

Q: My child left their jacket, lunchbox, etc. on the bus, who do I contact?
